According to a study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, researchers compared coffees of several different roasting levels, namely, light roast vs dark roast, to identify the correlation between caffeine and a well-known antioxidant called chlorogenic acid. The results showed the benefits of light roast coffee far outweigh those of dark roast coffee. They also found a connection between coffee and inflammation. In fact, the lighter the coffee roast, the higher the chlorogenic acid content, and the better the protection against cell damage and inflammation.
Antioxidants protect the body against many health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s. They can also prove beneficial for those suffering from chronic neck or back pain.
While the findings in this particular study may not convince dark coffee lovers to make a sudden switch to their daily java routine, there’s something simple you can do to still reap the many health benefits. All it takes is changing what you pour into your next cup of coffee.
