Are you prone to developing Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s is a disease that touches too many individuals. Approximately 5.4 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, with another person developing the condition every 68 seconds. Alzheimer’s disease touches about 37 million people’s lives in some way — whether it be a friend or family member who is suffering from the condition.

Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in America and is characterized through memory loss. The disease makes it difficult for those affected to carry out daily activities.

Modern medicine has not found a cure for the disease. However, there are ways to lower your chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Here are some ways to keep healthy longer:

Healthy eating. You can help lower your risk for developing Alzheimer’s by eating a well-balanced diet. Start by eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, protein and whole grains. Consider breaking up your meals into six smaller portions to get you through the day. This will help boost your metabolism as well.

Stay fit. Getting regular exercise will go a long way in lowering your risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Shoot for fitting in 30 minutes of cardio five times per week. You should also ensure that you incorporate strength training into your routine two to three times per week. You will feel great and prolong your life. 

Exercise your mind. The most important thing you can do to protect against Alzheimer’s is to keep your brain sharp. Find ways to exercise your brain on a daily basis. Take a class to learn something new, build a puzzle or solve a riddle. There are many ways that you can keep your brain active. Look for unique ways to spark intrigue. 

Lower your stress. Reducing your stress levels will go a long way in lessening your odds of developing Alzheimer’s disease. If you get stressed, try some breathing exercises to help you calm down. You can also take part in an activity such as yoga to help relieve stress. Reducing stress in your life is something that will take practice. Find what works well for you and stick with it.

Sleep well. Lack of sleep means your brain is tired and not functioning at its highest capacity. Sleep deprivation can affect how your brain stores important information as well as how that memory is recalled. To ensure that you get a good night’s sleep, create a dark space that is quiet and without distractions. Try to incorporate a sleep routine. This will help signal to your brain that it is time to rest. Once you get used to your routine, you will find that you feel more rested.
