Professional Golfer Peter Jacobsen’s awesome health tips

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle seems to be a lot easier said that done, especially as you age. Sometimes, it’s difficult to prepare all of your food from scratch or hit the gym every single day. Not only does living a healthy lifestyle keep your waistline in check, it will also help prevent you from getting chronic diseases.

Peter Jacobsen, a professional golfer of 40 years, understands the importance of staying healthy as you age. He’s about to be 60 years old in March and still regularly competes in golf competitions such as the PGA tour and Champions tour. Here are some of his tips to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle:

Q: What are the top ways you stay in shape?

Stretch all the time. I find it most important to stretch. To play the PGA tour and Champions tour, you have to be as loose and limber as you can be. More so than strength training and cardio – both are important. Stretching helps keep your muscles loose and ready for everyday activities, too.

Take time to walk. I used to run when I was kid, but I’ve had knee and hip replacement and a minimally invasive spine surgery at Laser Spine Institute.

Walking really helps when I play golf. It also helps keep my weight down. Take time to walk every day — even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Watch your weight. Controlling your diet is hard, especially when you travel a lot. When you travel with the PGA tour, there’s no way to control your diet. It’s almost impossible to eat properly while traveling. It’s one of the most difficult things I’ve done in 40 years playing the tour. But I try to avoid fried foods, not eat heavy meals late at night and eat a good breakfast. I also try to stay away from sugar and candy.

Don’t overdo it. Whenever I do any type of exercise, whether it’s swimming or doing the elliptical, I do it in moderation because I find it is too hard to recover at my age. I make sure that I plan to have the time to do it and recover from it.

 Drink a lot of water. When I’m traveling, and when I’m on the golf course, I drink a lot of water. I add Crystal Light to give it some flavor.
