Tax Day Stress Relief Tips

One of the leading stressors in America is finances. With the looming deadline of tax day coming up, it’s inevitable to feel the weight of the world on your shoulders. To make sure you don’t run down your mind or body during this stressful time of the year, incorporate some stress management techniques into your routine.

Keep your stress in check by trying some of these tactics:

 

  1. Take breaks. While doing your taxes, plan to take multiple 5-minute breaks so it doesn’t feel like such a daunting task. Get up and stretch your body to relieve any tension. You could even walk a lap around your house or apartment.
  2. Find healthy ways to deal with the stress. Instead of ordering a pizza or eating chips, munch on some veggies and hummus or chew gum. The action of doing something mindless such as eating can help alleviate underlying stress. Plan what you will eat before you start so you aren’t tempted to order take-out.
  3. Get some fresh air. If you’re taking a break from the computer screen, or stressing out in the days leading up to doing your taxes, try to get outside. Go for a jog, take a walk with the dog, or try doing yoga to release some of the negative energy and give your brain a break.
  4. Pick up the phone. Sometimes you just need to get it off your chest and vent to somebody. Give an old friend a call or dial up a family member for a nice chat. Distraction can ease your body from the stress, making you more relaxed.
  5. Sit correctly. Posture is a huge deal when you’re sitting while working on a computer. Try to keep your shoulders down and sit up straight. Sitting in an awkward position or tensing up can cause neck and back pain.
  6. Reward yourself. Come up with an incentive to motivate you to finish your taxes. It will give you something to look forward to, and could be as simple as a glass of wine or watching your favorite TV show.

These coping mechanisms can lead to long-term problems, especially if you have back problems.
