November is National Family Caregivers Month

National Family Caregivers (NFC) Monthis observed every November. This widely recognized tribute seeks to draw attention to the many challenges facing family caregivers as they strive to provide quality care to their loved ones, advocate for stronger public policy to address family caregiving issues, and raise awareness about community programs that support family caregivers. The theme for NFC Month is for family caregivers to “PROTECT your health… REACH OUT for help.”

The Family Caregivers Association first celebrated this cause in 1994 when it launched National Family Caregivers Week. In 1997, President Clinton signed the first-ever presidential proclamation to recognize NFC Month. An American President has proclaimed NFC Month every year since, and many states, as well as dozens of local municipalities, also have proclaimed November as NFC Month.

The purpose of this celebration is to highlight the more than 65 million family caregivers in America who play a crucial role in providing care to patients. Compared to a family member, there simply isn’t another individual on the caregiving team who is in a better position to ensure the continuity of care. Who else knows a patient’s medication regimen better? Who else is more familiar with a patient’s treatment program? Who else understands a patient’s dietary and exercise plan? And above all else, who else is more in touch with a patient’s likes, dislikes, emotions, and feelings? That’s why family caregivers are so important.

NFC Month is designed to thank, support, educate, and empower these amazing individuals who do so much for patients across the country. Have you been touched by a family caregiver in your fight against chronic back or neck pain? Or are you a family caregiver yourself? Either way, be sure to join the discussion on the Laser Spine Institute Facebook page. There, you can converse with others in a similar situation to find out how vital a family caregiver can be to someone suffering from a spinal condition.
