Living with inflammation — whether it be chronic or brought on by injury— can be painful. Typically, inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury or illness. There are other forms of inflammation, though. Some people experience inflammation brought on by an autoimmune disease or chronic neck or back pain.
There are two types of inflammation: primary and chronic. Primary inflammation occurs every day within your body. It is the act of detoxifying your body and repairing cells. You won’t experience pain or even realize it is happening. The other form of inflammation is called chronic, also referred to as a “pathway of protection.” This occurs during an injury or in those with an autoimmune disease.
Regardless of the cause of inflammation, you can still find ways to beat the pain. Check out these tips to keep you inflammation-free:
Eat well. A proper diet is important to lower your chances for an inflammation flare-up. Load up on plenty of fruits and veggies, as they are full of anti-inflammatory phytonutrients such as antioxidants. You should also avoid sugar, as it affects your adrenal glands. Impaired adrenal glands affect your ability to combat stress, which can increase inflammation. Dairy is also shown to increase inflammation. Eating a diet that is catered to reducing inflammation will help ease the frequency and severity of your flare-ups.
Sleep. You can also help defeat inflammation by ensuring that you get a good night’s sleep. A night without restful sleep can prompt an inflammation flare-up because your body is not rested. The more tired you are, the more difficult it is to fight off inflammation. Strive to get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night.
Stay active. Although inflammation makes many movements difficult, staying active is one of the best things you can do for your body. Studies have shown that physically active adults had 33 percent less C-reactive protein, the marker for inflammation, in their bodies than those who were sedentary. Find some time to take a walk or get creative to inject some physical activity into your life.
Consider meds. Many physicians suggest that those suffering from chronic inflammation consider taking a daily dose of over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, naproxen and ibuprofen. This daily dose may help prevent inflammation.
If you have an inflammation flare-up, it can be treated with over-the-counter, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. You can also use hot and cold therapy to help ease your pain. Use ice for 20 minutes at a time to help relieve the pain, reapplying as often as necessary. After a couple days, you can switch to heat to help lower the inflammation. If it persists for an extended period, call your physician.
