How Yoga Helps Natalie Gulbis Prevent Back Pain

NatalieIf you’re like me, life holds too many opportunities to let an injury hold you back. I’ve been golfing since I was 4 years old and went professional well before my 20th birthday. “Active” doesn’t begin to describe my lifestyle. So it goes without saying that a healthy, pain-free back is essential to my success.

When I started experiencing back pain a few years ago, I was in the midst of a thriving career and enjoying my many other hobbies, such as yoga and running. Being in my twenties and enjoying a thriving golf career, the last thing I needed was something that could slow down my momentum.  I was determined to find a way to move past the pain. Like most athletes, the possibility of surgery can grind everything to a halt; follow-up care and therapy can take months away from your training.

This is why Laser Spine Institute was such a great option for me. With minimally invasive procedures, Laser Spine Institute has a quick recovery turnaround and allowed me to get back to enjoying my life and building my golf career. I didn’t have to sacrifice any of my interests.

But Laser Spine Institute did more than guarantee I could keep my career intact. With their help, I’m able to do more today than I ever thought I would be able to.

Now, I’m not only continuing my pursuit of yoga, I’m actually improving my flexibility and strengthening my back on a regular basis. One of the things I love about yoga is the consistent challenge that it presents. There’s always a new pose that I’m looking to tackle. But you don’t have to be a professional golfer to appreciate the benefits of yoga. Even medical research backs this up; in 2011, researchers declared that yoga is more effective than regular stretching for back pain relief.

If you’re just starting out with yoga, try working on some classic poses such as downward-facing dog. This pose only seems easy. Work your way up to full extension and, over time, it will strengthen the muscles you use for standing and lifting. Add the child’s pose to your list as well; this stretch helps elongate your spine and relieves pressure or pinching.

No one should live in pain. It’s a sign from your body that something needs to be addressed and adjusted. With Laser Spine Institute’s help, I’ll be able to continue chasing my dreams down the green.
